Objective Different endoscopic techniques have been introduced into neurosurgery, but accepted terminology and definitions are still missing. We propose a terminology based on whether the endoscope is used alone or in conjunction with an operating microscope and on whether the route of surgical manipulations is through or outside the endoscope. Brain abscess formation within an endodermal cyst of the frontal lobe: case report.

A 38-year-old man with a right frontal lobe cyst was treated by endoscopic cystoventriculostomy in 1998. Cyst capsule histology revealed surprisingly an endodermal cyst. The patient was reoperated for cyst expansion by endoscopic re-cystoventriculostomy in 2005. In 2007, the patient suffered from brain abscess formation within the cyst which was punctured. The history was positive for a dental infection. In 2008, a recurrent brain abscess in the cyst occurred. The cyst was completely resected. There was no history of trauma or sinusitis. Endoscopic Treatment of Arachnoid Cysts

Background Surgical treatment of arachnoid cysts remains under debate. Although many authors favor endoscopic techniques, others attribute a higher recurrence rate to the endoscope. Objective The authors report their experience with endoscopic procedures for arachnoid cyst. Methods All pure endoscopic procedures for arachnoid cysts performed by the authors were analyzed. Particular reference was given to surgical complications and patient outcome in relation to cyst location and endoscopic technique. Otoneurological management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma

Objective: The aim of the study is to review the management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma. The surgical approaches for drainage or total removal and the wait and see policy were analyzed, and outcomes were evaluated. Methods: Retrospective charts of 27 patients managed for petrous apex cholesterol granuloma with a minimum follow-up of 12 months were analyzed in a quartenary skull base center. Presenting symptoms and signs were recorded, and radiologic imaging was evaluated. Management options included wait and see policy and surgery by several approaches. Arachnoid cysts: does surgery improve epileptic seizures and headaches?

During the period from 1985 to 1992 we treated 43 patients with intracranial arachnoid cysts (ACs). In this retrospective study we assessed the outcome of these patients with regard to non-specific symptoms such as headaches and epileptic seizures. Twelve patients had headaches of obscure origin and a mostly temporal located AC. Six of these 12 underwent surgery. After the operation 4 patients (4/6) had no further headaches, two remained unchanged. The other 6 conservatively treated patients (6/12) had further headaches. Arachnoid cysts: How do postsurgical cyst size and seizure outcome correlate?

Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are congenital cystic brain malformations associated with epilepsy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of surgical intervention of ACs on cyst size and seizure outcome. We reviewed the world's medical literature dealing with surgically treated ACs in epilepsy patients. Our study included only cases, in which the relationship between pre- and post-operative CT-size of the AC and seizure outcome was described. Cerebral arachnoid cyst: a lesion of the child's brain.

39 patients with 42 arachnoid cysts have been reviewed in a retrospective study. All kinds of arachnoid cysts reported in the literature were also found in this study. These consist mainly of congenital primary and post-traumatic secondary cysts. Cysts which cause no major neurological deficits require conservative treatment of symptoms only. Cysts which cause major symptoms because of their space occupying nature, however, require surgical treatment. Craniotomy with removal of membranes to allow free physiological circulation of CSF is the treatment of choice in our hands. Endoscopic and endoscope-assisted neurosurgical treatment of suprasellar arachnoidal cysts (Mickey Mouse cysts).

Suprasellar arachnoid cysts represent less than 10% of all intracranial arachnoid cysts. Some of them may be quiescent throughout life, some may become symptomatic as they become enlarged and some disappear spontaneously. Typical trigeminal neuralgia by an atypical compression: case report and review of the literature.

Aim Trigeminal neuralgia is a disabling form of facial pain that causes a considerable discomfort and a marked reduction in the quality of life.
